Tips for Personal
Email
-
Only give your email
address to persons or companies that you want to receive
email from.
-
When you sign up for
programs, always check their policy on giving out your email
address. If they make it available for others to use, you
might want to rethink signing up with them. For instance, the
policy at i4c is that we never give out your address to
anyone else and we only send you occasional emails announcing
new programs or new.
-
If you are signing
up for Free Information or a Free Program, open a separate
email account to use just for these type of sign ups. A
lot of junk mail will come and you won't want to clutter up your
personal email.
-
Ask your friends and
family to respect your privacy by not giving out your
address to just anyone. The should have your permission
first.
-
Remember, just as
you protect your own email, you should also protect the email
addresses of your friends. Do not give out their
addresses without their knowledge and permission.
Tips for Business
Email
-
A business can have
many email accounts used for different purposes. Only pick
one account to give out to the public so they can contact
you. That way your other accounts will be private.
-
Do not allow your
employees to use the business email for personal use.
Instead, direct them to this i4c Email course and let them open
their own accounts.

Safeguarding Your Private
Information
Back to the
Top |
| Sending private
information in an email can be unsafe. Unfortunately, there are "hackers"
on the Internet that are good enough to even invade your personal
email as it is sending over the net. This should not stop
you from using the net out of fear, but it should cause you to
always think "safe"
Here are some tips for safeguarding what you send for both
personal and business email:
- Use caution when sending
financial information such as bank account numbers or credit
card numbers. Always try and send them in 2 or more emails
with just a part of each number in each email.
- Never put the words "bank
account" or "credit card" in the subject line. If
hackers are scanning for key words these would attract them.
- Never send your account
number and password or pin number in the same
email. Again, break them up and send in several emails with a
false subject.
- If any company or person tries
to sell you something and wants your credit card or bank
information for the order sent by email, DO NOT DO IT!
In fact, you should immediately report them for fraud. No
reputable company would ask you to do this.

Safeguarding Against
Junk Mail
Back to the
Top |
| Junk
mail is nothing more than advertisements that are sent to your
email. The only word I can use to describe it is 'annoying'. But,
if you are going to surf the net and take advantage of offers you
find, you are going to get junk mail and you need to learn how to
handle it.
Tips on Safeguarding Against Junk Mail
-
Open several FREE
email accounts. Use one for your personal email and use one
just for sign ups for free information, etc. This way all the
junk mail will go to one account and can be easily deleted.
-
Remember, there
is no law that says you have to read the junk mail. Learn to
recognize junk mail or ads by the subject. I usually
go down my list and tick all the emails that I know are just ads
and then delete them without even opening them all at the same
time.
-
You can get your
email address removed from mailing lists. At the bottom of
the email ads must be a link to click or instructions to use to
have your address removed from the list.
-
If a company or
person sends an email ad with no way to unsubscribe, report them
immediately as SPAM. There is a link at Yahoo right on the
email to do this. However, be careful. If you report someone who
is not a spammer, perhaps someone you are mad at.

Safeguarding Against
Email Fraud
Back to the
Top |
| Email
fraud, hoaxes, chain letters, Spam, and scams all exist on the
Internet. They are not
going to go away. You should be aware of them and safeguard
yourself against them.
Tips:
- Do not believe everything some
stranger sends you in an email
- Do not respond to requests for
financial help in an email from a stranger
- Do not waste your time on chain
letters, they are hoaxes
- Do not order anything by email
that asks for your credit card number or bank account number.
- If you receive an email that is
suspicious, report it. That is the only way this type of fraud
can be stopped.
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to read the
i4c FREE Report on How to Avoid Scams and Fraud on the
Internet. Your best defense is information and you will get
the information you need in this report.
